ArtPrize 2011 Print 14
This is a very normal kind of performance painting for me on the spinning easel. As I said in prior emails, I love Jazz, and I love painting with Jazz music. It seems to be the original kind of music that performance painting was accepted to be combined with. Jazz and Big Band music just has so many rhythms to push the brush around the canvas. The colours come out in clear tones and notes as splashes. The spinning of the easel makes them move on their own… and I push those movements around the canvas to the rhythm of the music. And I get what you see….
It is somewhat difficult to explain all these reasons why I paint in such a way. It is like dancing with the canvas, and has an amazing feeling to make paintings in such a way. Like adding a third dimension to a 2d art form. And I am short… so I can reach the top.
This person in this painting is a friend of mine from new Orleans. By the name of Frank Parker. He is a wonderful trumpet player, and close drinking buddy. If anybody gets the chance to hear him play? Enjoy it.
This particular project was one of my favorites of my entire career to date. The entire mural took about one week of hard painting all day and late at night. Each painting was painted separately on stretched canvas measuring 42 inches by 60 inches. All with standard house paints donated by Repcolite Paints, I painted to the pace of different types of music and sounds. All the works were done on my spinning easel with an audience of about a million. ArtPrize is a wonderful experience and an outstanding experiment for the city of Grand Rapids. I look forward to returning to ArtPrize 2012.
