“Scheherazade”, 2011. Oil on Canvas 60 inches by 42 inches. When I had painted this I had just got back to da patch from Tennessee painting murals and the Japan crisis was happening. I had been listening to Rimsky Korsakov’s “Ilse of the Dead” which is a part of his composition based on the “1001 Arabian Nights” story. If you are familiar with the work then you know who this painting is. Her world behind is drab and untouched by imagination. She looks east and the world outside pulls her out. The tears are of her freedom that she may never see again, but her stories she tells takes her farther away than she can imagine.
